Poisonous Plants & Fungi
- Extremely toxic when consumed—especially the roots, though the toxins (tropane alkaloids) are present in all parts with concentrations varying throughout the season.
- Causes delirium, hallucinations, delusions; dilated pupils, light sensitivity, blurred vision; inhibition of the parasympathetic nervous system, which controls heart rate and breathing, potentially leading to death.
- Contains the potent toxin aconitine, particularly in roots and tubers, that can cause detrimental effects even through skin contact.
- Initially causes nausea, diarrhea, and vomiting; progresses to numbness and tingling, motor weakness, sweating, confusion, dizziness; fatality occurs due to disruption of the heart, and postmortem signs indicate asphyxia.
